About Us AFRA

The African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) is an intergovernmental Agreement established by African Member States to further strengthen and enlarge the contribution of nuclear science and technology to socio-economic development on the African continent. The scope of AFRA activities covers a wide range of peaceful applications of nuclear techniques that contribute towards the achievement of national and regional development goals.

Agreement

The AFRA Agreement is a legal document, which guides and regulates the implementation of the AFRA activities in the region, and defines the interfacing between the AFRA Member States and its partners, including the IAEA.

Scope

The scope of AFRA activities includes the peaceful application of all technically and developmentally sound nuclear techniques, which can contribute significantly towards the achievement of national and regional development objectives.

Partners

The African Union, the OPEC Fund, Spain, France, the USA, IAEA, UN-Aids, ESTRO, ISRO, New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad).
